The Fountain
Saturday, March 31, 2007,8:56 PM

I bought a DVD collection at Metrowalk yesterday for only P70. What’s amazing about the disc is that it contains eight varied titles: The Fountain, Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny, American Pie presents The Naked Mile, Flyboys, Little Miss Sunshine, Stolen, Night Skies and Lady in the Water. How I wish I could watch them all in one day!

>>>

The Fountain (Trailer)

This morning I watched Darren Aronofsky’s The Fountain starring Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz. The film is an odyssey about one man’s (Tommy/Tomas) eternal struggle to save the woman (Izzy) he loves. A cliché (love) story, actually.

There are three interrelated time periods in the film. It stitches together in a single thread the world of Spanish conquistador during the 16th century, the present day, and the futuristic 26th century space age. Majority of the scenes take place in the here and now, while the third strand happens in the future, with Tommy meditating in the space bubble. The plot is far too complex to explicate, blame it on the fragmented storytelling.

Watching the film is like looking at an avante-garde, abstract expressionist painting, hence it taps your cognitive capacities. It is not an easy film to watch, especially for people who are used to viewing movies with predictable and straightforward storyline. Some scenes are intentionally executed to spawn different interpretations. It’s a hodgepodge of symbolism, reality, fiction, metaphysics, and many other elements. Except for its’ ambiguity, I still think the film, technically and cinematically-wise, is outstanding. It has impressive cinematography and special effects. Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weiz’s acting is also very believable and moving.

A sweet cinematic kitsch, hence.

One down, seven to go.

I applied for an ATM account at Landbank-Faculty Center this morning. This means that, finally, I could receive my long overdue (take note: December) salary from my previous job as a writer at NCCA. The newly-implemented DBM policy really sucks!

Laking Batibot
Thursday, March 29, 2007,4:53 PM

Batibot

Nostalgia, bow.

Sumisingot-singhot, may sipon.

Mission Accomplished
Tuesday, March 27, 2007,7:34 PM

Fate is on my side today.

There’s no immediate task to accomplish here at the office. Woohoo! Thank God. I was able to finish writing my final paper for M.A. Philippine Arhitecture class under the tutelage of Gerald Lico. I’ll be presenting it tomorrow.

So far, I’ve been successful in my mission to normalize my eating habit and gain pounds. For the past three days, I’ve been eating a lot. Today, for instance, I ate the following: spanish bread, cheese bread, pande coco, rice with chicken adobo, onion chives crackers, cloud 9, raisins, and 1/4 lb. Hotshots cheeseburger. Wow, that’s a lot. Tsalap. Katakawan, wala pa ang dinner diyan.

Trip to UPLB Part II
Monday, March 26, 2007,8:23 PM

VIII.
Nagsimula na ang palabas. Payapa ang kalangitan.

IX.

Sabi nga ni Barthes, the author is dead.

XIII.

XIV.
Isang pamosong linya: Ang lalim.

Mabuhay kayong lahat! Hanggang sa muli!

The Hidden Meaning Behind My Name
Friday, March 23, 2007,8:23 PM

Just filling out spaces while killing time...It's 8:30pm, and I still have 30 minutes to waste. I'm starving to death.

You are an individual with high standards. You have a strong and stable character with a keenly analytical and logical mind. Preferring a practical and constructive approach to life you put your energies into activities which build material abundance. Your worldly success is an example to everyone of what careful organisation and determination can achieve.

Name Meanings: Discover The Hidden Meaning In Your Name

'S' - the life force which reinforces what is already there. It's often suave, sexy, strong and flexible. Unlike 'r', it looks very intelligently before it leaps. But like 'r' it's also very strong, if not so destructive. Still, it can slowly crush something it doesn't like, or it can stand firm and hold the world on its shoulders.

The Hidden Message In Your Name

Personal Number 1 -Here to learn leadership, independence and decision making skills, you strive to do your best possible when involved in any project that requires your original thinking. You are a pioneer reaching out to create or invent new ways of doing things. The status quo is just not good enough, and you are always looking for a better method to accomplish a given task. Strong willed and able to stand on your own two feet, life gives you many challenges and tests.
You forge forward, eager to learn, experience, and meet your goals. You can become so involved in a project, others may see you as compulsive. From your perspective, you are absorbed in what you are doing, enjoying every minute of it, and prefer to work on the project rather than break from it. You are motivated. You are self-reliant, think for yourself, and determined to be self-made. You are a leader, a promoter, and meet obstacles with courage. Be careful to not be too overpowering of others dreams and wishes. When in a negative frame of mind, you can be domineering and too aggressive. Learn to inject new and original ideas, not force them on others.

Last Day High, 300, Etc.
Thursday, March 22, 2007,8:25 PM

Yesterday was the last day of my dragging M.A. class. (Finally!) I was still sick when I discussed two lengthy essays, “Historical and Conceptual Overview of Politics and Aesthetics” and “Culture and Political Theory.” Our “beloved” professor forced us to finish all the readings. Our supposed three-hour class had been extended to a fatiguing six-hour discussion. Shet! Nevertheless, it’s done. What I need to do now is to finish my final paper for the said class.

Dilemma #1: No topic yet. I'll think about it this weekend. I don’t want to be cerebral when I’m here at the office.

Dilemma #2: Deadline is on April 3. I still have two weeks of “cramming period.” Hehe.

(L-R: Sarah, Ian, Eric, Franco, Joseph, Maysa, Elma, MC, and Me)

* * *
After that exhausting “last day high,” we went to see the film, 300, at SM North Edsa. An adaptation of the graphic novel by Frank Miller, the film is about a group of 300 Spartan warriors spearheaded by King Leonidas, who stood up against the thousands of Persians attempting to conquer the Sparta. That is basically the (shallow) storyline. No substance, bluntly put.

The film, however, is a visual treat, atleast. The CGI and (bloody) cinematography are good. The film has a lot of jaw-dropping and extremely shocking battle sequences. I personally like how the digital artists have made the blood squirting scenes too real. From a formalistic point of view, “300,” literally and figuratively, is one hell of a film.

This is Spartaaaa!!!!!!!

It is only dubious how and why the film got an R-13 (or PG-13) rating instead of an R-18. The film is brutally violent for a thirteen-year old kid. There are also breast and ass exposures, female-to-female kissing and acts of S/M in the film. Tsk, tsk, tsk. Did Henry Sy (or his alipores) tap the MTRCB to give it an R-13 rating? Most probably, yes.

***
I bought a pqi flash disk (512 MB) from www.ebay.ph for only Php400. The item was shipped for free. Sulit! Thanks Joanna!

Trip to UPLB
Monday, March 19, 2007,5:48 PM

I.
Sabado. Gumising ako bandang alas-dos y media ng hapon. Sinisipon at inuubo pa rin ako. Nilalagnat pa rin ata. Ewan.

VIII.
Nagsimula na ang palabas. Payapa ang kalangitan.

Itutuloy…

Vantage
Thursday, March 15, 2007,11:54 PM

My classmate, Joseph, and I went to Megamall Art Center for an exhibit opening of “Vantage.” The exhibit features the artworks of three social realist painters namely Antipas Delotavo, Pablo Baen Santos, and Renato Habulan, popularly and collectively known as 3Anggulo. I saw a lot of familiar faces during the launching – UP professors/scholars (Dr. Alice Guillermo, Prof. Reuben Cañete, Dr. Bernadette Abrera, Prof. Roland Tolentino, etc), activist-artists (too many to mention), old classmates and former colleagues (Manix, Yayo, etc.). I stayed there for about an hour, had a free merienda (hehe!) and headed to Seattle's Best for an appointment.

Antipas Delotavo
Diaspora (study)
Oil on canvas

Delotavo’s painting entitled “Diaspora” stands out, in my opinion, not because of its gigantic size but because of its subject. The artwork explores several interrelated threads of the diasporic phenomenon of the Filipinos – globalization, de-centralization and re-location. The painting is a clear homage to more than 10 million overseas Filipinos worldwide.

In the exhibit catalogue, Eileen Legaspi-Ramirez writes that in this particular painting, "Delotavo worked from thousands of photographs he’d snapped at the NAIA departure area, mounting his pared down ground with painted renderings of Filipinos leaving RP turf with their earthly belongings, backs turned and suggesting some subtle degree of resignation.”

“Vantage” runs from March 14 to 27, 2007. For more information, visit the Finale Art Gallery.

Saturday, March 10, 2007,11:34 AM

Some significant and not-so-significant happenings yesterday:

Finally I bought something new for myself – a large black bag for only P200.

We (Eleyn, Jayson, Yinsu, Agent K and Jeeu) had our dinner (for the nth time) at Hap Tian. We stayed there for more than three hours, laughing about and discussing a variety of subjects – waves of feminism, Derrida, BAFTA, films (as usual!), violence, popular culture, underrated actors and Susan Africa.

Agent K will start her stint as a “police reporter” in Inquirer next week. She’s been assigned to cover stories at the Eastern Police District. Astig. Go Agent K!

I heard some positive reviews about these films:
Short Bus, Babel, History Boys

These blogs need further optimization, but don’t have the time and patience. As of today, these have only earned $52.82 in Adsense. Looking forward to my first $100 check from Google!

Bjork - Volta
Thursday, March 8, 2007,7:55 PM

Volta is the name of the album and the date is May 7th. The Press release reads thus:

"Musical innovator Björk releases her next studio album ‘Volta’ on May 7th 2007.

‘Volta’ is Björk's sixth studio album and follows the release of ‘Medúlla’ in 2004.

Featuring ten brand new and original tracks ‘Volta’ is entirely written and produced by Björk.

In the role of producer Björk has brought in various other musicians to work on her songs and ‘Volta’ features some of her most interesting collaborations so far with Antony Hegarty (Antony And The Johnsons) singing on two tracks, and Timbaland (Jay-Z, Missy Elliot etc) working with Björk on beats that she created for three further songs.

Other artists that feature on ‘Volta’ include electronic pioneer Mark Bell of LFO and two unique drummers – Chris Corsano (the improvisational drummer who has worked with Sonic Youth amongst others) and Brian Chippendale from Lightening Bolt.

Björk also brought in two acclaimed African artists for ‘Volta’ - Toumani Diabate, the Malian kora player and Konono No1 the experimental band from The Congo who won a BBC World Music Award in 2006. She has also put together her own 10 piece female brass section of Icelandic musicians who play on three further tracks. Meanwhile Chinese pipa expert Min Xiao-Fen plays on one song."

So it read! And now we can start counting down: One, 2, three, four, 5, ...... etc.

News taken from http://bjork.com/news/?id=608;year=2007

Can't wait to buy Bjork's Volta CD on May!

Two of Wands
Wednesday, March 7, 2007,5:40 PM

I like what my single card reading at www.newagestore.com reveals today. Very true.

Briefly: Time to consider a new move in your life that will make big changes to your existing living arrangements.

Full Reading: This card shows a man with part of his back to us and he is holding a staff in one hand and a globe of the world in the other and is looking out towards a distant mountain. He appears to be studious and in deep concentration. He may be seriously considering his future. He is tall and well built and wears a helmet for protection and a cloak for warmth.

This can suggest that you are about to consider a new move in your life that will make big changes to your existing living arrangements. You may actually uproot yourself and move to another country, another state or another town. Your job is obviously undergoing some kind of transformation and you may be breaking new ground with some new endeavour. This will require your time, your patience and your strong belief in yourself that you can do anything you set out to do. You could be presented with a rather unique opportunity that leads you on to pursue your wildest dreams. Or you may have developed your own vision or idea and be in the process of bringing this all to fruition by your very own hands.

Don't let others sidetrack you at this stage, for you are vulnerable to suggestion and may listen to some bad advice or discouragement. Trust in your own wisdom and you will ultimately have the last laugh.

My Bittersweet Childhood Songs
Tuesday, March 6, 2007,6:37 PM

Wala lang. This post is written without intention.

Eternal Flame
by The Bangles
This (melodramatic) song reminds me of my childhood, back in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, back in the days when I used to play tumbang preso, luksong baka and siyato with my friends and cousins in front of my grandfather’s ancestral house. Strange but true.

Always
by Erasure
I was an active kid in my primary school years. Believe it or not, I was even a member of a dance troupe that once mimicked “the moves” of the Universal Motion Dancers for an inter-school boyscout dancing contest. Nyehehehehe!

Total Eclipse of the Heart
by Bonnie Tyler
Whenever I hear this song, I am transported back in 1996 – the year when I competed for the Regional School Press Conference (RSPC) in Sta. Cruz, Laguna. I was in 6th grade. My Amerasian schoolmate participated in the Little Ms. RSPC beauty pageant, and this “tacky” song highlighted the said competition. She did not win because she forgot the last few lines of her declamation piece. It was such a disaster.

To be continued...

Nelly Furtado - All Good Things (Come To An End) Mp3
"Flames to dust/Lovers to friends/Why do all good things come to an end." Such an infectious song. This is the only song I like from Nelly Furtado's latest and most "commercial" album, Loose.

Kalawakan-Kawalan-Kawal
Saturday, March 3, 2007,12:21 AM

Tinanong mo si P, “Kailan ba ‘to matatapos?”
“Sumakay ka lang sa agos. ‘Wag kang magrationalize,” sagot niya.
“Anong gusto mong gawin ko, magphilosophize, magtheorize?” sambit ko.

Kawalan
sa
kawalan
sa
kawalan.

Walang pagsisisi. Nagpasalamat ka.

Tuldok.

Kinabukasan, nagising ka. Hinanap mo pa ang daan pauwi. Nakarating ka naman sa iyong paroroonan.

Isa ka ng matapang na kawal.

Once Upon A Time
Friday, March 2, 2007,6:31 PM

"Once Upon A Time"
by The Smashing Pumpkins

Mother I'm tired
Come surrender my son
Time has ravaged on my soul
No plans to leave but still I go

Fallin' with the leaves
Fallin' out of sleep
To the last goodbyes
Who cares why?

Mother I've tried
Wasting my life
I haven't given up, I lie
To make you so proud in my eyes

Fallin' out of sleep
Crawlin' over me
To the last goodbyes
Who cares why?

Tuesdays come and gone
Restless i still drive
Try to leave it all behind

Fallin', fallin' out of sleep
Fallin', fallin' with the leaves
I go crawlin', crawlin' over me

Once upon a time in my life...
I went falling...

Mother I hope you know
That I miss you so
Time has ravaged on my soul
To wipe a mothers tears grown cold

Sloganeering
Thursday, March 1, 2007,2:03 PM

The election season is in the air. This of course, in Philippine setting, means welcoming (or abhorring) a world of carnivalesque. You have probably heard the senatoriables' campaign jingles and ads over the radio or have seen their TV commercials. Bakya kung bakya. It is no wonder why their “tasteless” political ads have only become a laughing matter or a source of comic relief for many people.

Below are some of these outrageous campaign slogans and tag lines:

“Pichay Itanim sa Senado”
Prospero Pichay
(This tag is too ridiculous! What if Pichay Ibaon sa Lupa, Pichay sa Kangkungan, Pichay, Singkwenta Per Kilo or Pichay Baguio? Mr. Palengke (Mar Roxas) should support his candidacy. A mishmash of their tag lines would be: Mr. Palengke, kinilo si Pichay. Hahahaha!!)

“K sa Senado”
Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan
(What’s the “K” of Kiko to succeed again in the coming elections? It is obviously his “Kabiyak,” none other than Sharon Cuneta.)

“Walking Tol / ‘Tol Kaibigan ng Bayan!”
Mike Defensor
(Walking Ulol is much more applicable! Defensor’s commercial is the most bakya among the senatorial candidates. It’s a perfect ten (kalabasa)!

“Mr. Energy Boom, Boom / Amigo ng Bayan”
Miguel Zubiri
(Amigo!? Let’s have the opinion of his “ex,” Vina Morales, or any member of Wowowee Girls! Zubiri, Zubiri, Boom, Boom, Boom!)

“My Guy: Vic Magsaysay”
Vic Magsaysay
(Nora Aunor owns this title, what the hell? Stealing is illegal.)

“Ang Pipol’s Dragon / ’Pag Bad Ka, Lagot Ka”
Joker Arroyo
(There’s something missing in this line – Lagot Ka…Isusumbong Kita…Kay Misis!)

“Ang Gara ng Buhay”
Edgardo Angara
(People are tired of same old promises and rhetorics!)

“Idol ng Bayan”
Chavit Singson
(Leave this alias to April Boy Regino! He should’ve used his own name as his slogan. Chavit as in Sabit!)
