Home alone, I watched this afternoon the DVD which I bought last night for P25 from my
suking tindahan in Alabang. The film was “Thank You for Smoking.”
“Thank You for Smoking” follows the life and career of Nick Naylor (Aaron Eckhart), lobbyist and spokesman for the Academy of Tobacco Studies. As spokesman, among Naylor’s tasks are to promote cigarette smoking, speak before the public about the researches conducted by the Academy and defend the rights of smokers. Every week, Naylor meets with his bestfriends – Polly Bailey (Maria Bello) and Bobby Jay Bliss (David Koecher), who are alchol and gun industries lobbyists, respectively. The three jokingly call themselves as the “M.O.D. Squad,” which stands for “Merchants of Death.” For a more detailed synopsis, click Thank You for Smoking.

What’s my verdict? I give it an 8/10 rating. I enjoyed watching it, most likely because satire and parody as cinematic approaches always work for me. The film is witty and, at the same time, discursive. It is about rhetorics, debate, and a funny caricature of corporate politics and image culture centered on the machination of the tobacco empire. “Thank You for Smoking” is “must-see” for both smokers and non-smokers.
And, by the way, the film gave birth to some of these quotable quotes:
“There’s no smoke without liars.” - True enough.
“It's not a negotiation, it's an argument.” – Naylor’s advice to his son.
“Michael Jordan plays ball, Charles Manson kills people. I talk. Everyone has a talent.” – Naylor’s last line in the film.

Headache

My head is so fucked up these past three days. Is it because of the agonizing summer heat, computer eyestrain, stress or insufficient sleep? The real cause of this chronic headache is something I don’t know. I think I need to have another visit to a neurologist this weekend.
I abhor this year’s summer, more than ever.
Yesterday’s temperature hit the 36°C mark. The campaign period brouhaha also makes me queasy. Pakingshet!

Karen, fondly called by her peers as "Kangel,” is officially resigned from work...how sad! Yesterday was her farewell party. Everybody is surely going to miss her!
I have only known Karen for about three months, and from that period, I had the (rare, naks!) opportunity to have some eloquent/meaningful conversations with her about family, life, random stuff. I just so salute her commitment to her family. Her (soap opera material) life is such an inspiration.

At home, at last.
Thanks to Holy Week holiday, I have quarter of a week to hibernate and recharge my battery. After that is another hell week. I’ll be buying multivitamins or anti-stress tablets on Monday as a precautionary measure. My body might be in shock again and I don’t want to endure fever or similar viral shit once more. No way!

Hershey, my older sister, is still in Pennsylvania, USA. She’ll return next month. Looking forward to my
pasalubong! I’m asking for a cheap
digital camera. This one is only $48.84 from Walmart.
Smith, my repulsive younger brother, has graduated from high school. He plans to take up ComSci. That’s a good choice, he’s a PC geek.
This morning, my opinionated was talking to a visitor about politics and the coming elections. His thunderous voice woke me up.
Volatile. That’s the adjective that best describes my menopausal mother. At present, she’s been enjoying taking good care of her six love birds. Sometimes, she takes pleasure in bugging us. She’s still an unpredictable volcano, to be exact.

He entered the overcrowded room, empty,
carrying a plastic bag of paraphernalia: half a liter of dextrose solution, anesthesia, needle, tube, bandage.
While waiting for his turn,
he couldn’t help but examine every detail of the space:
the blemished walls and ceilings, the debilitated fan, the dirt on the floor, the visual pollution.
He was trying to remember everything.
He killed time.
Time almost killed him.
Thirty minutes passed, the obnoxious-looking nurse finally called his name.
He laid on the dirty white bed as directed,
with no tinge of anxiety,
relishing every aspect of it: the pain of the injection, the rhythmic sound of the machine, the bitter chemicals in his throat, the flowing glucose in his veins, the artificial oxygen in his system,
the uncertainty.
A moment of vacuity.
He woke up only to find out the doctor’s obscure diagnosis:
a scratched stomach (or heart).
