Angas 101
Thursday, May 31, 2007,2:50 AM

Tuturukan daw niya ng Marxist perspective – disruption, installation art bilang ephemeral mode of (economic) exchange. Shet. Ang saya. Nakakalulang scope nga lang. Sabi ko, parang pagpapatiwakal ‘yan. Goodluck.

nakakakilabot na media coverage sa Malacanang (siyempre with our “beloved” President),

The Fall/The Rise

It pours/It appears
and pours./and disappears.
Like crystal tears/A fierce enigma

and the parched ground,/embossed with memories,
it falls,/it rises,
bidding farewell to the sun./auguring uncertainties.

Good News, Bad News
Thursday, May 24, 2007,2:57 AM

Good News: Peso hit the record-breaking P45 level against the US dollar last Tuesday.

Bad News: My sister, who just came from the States, is furious. Her dollar earnings have decreased in value. She prays for another coup attempt to bring down this reactionary government.

Good News: Manny Pacquiao lost in the congressional race in the first district of South Cotabato against Darlene Antonino-Custodio – what a relief! In a TV interview, Pacquiao said he plans to complete his studies next school year so people would no longer belittle him when he runs again. Ayus!

Bad News: Pacquiao wishes to study in any these universities: Ateneo, UP, La Salle or UST, but still undecided. Knockout!

Good/Bad News: I heard this surprising news only yesterday. Rumor has it that Nora Aunor is indeed a lesbian! The Clark Country, Las Vegas, Nevada marriage database revealed that Ate Guy, back in 2000, tied the knot with her butch talent manager, Norie Sayo.

Good/Bad News: Film producers plan to do a sequel of "T-Bird at Ako" alongside Vilma Santos. Hahahaha! What if? That would be a sure blockbuster hit!

Good News: After three days of trial and error, I finally accessed the CRS Online and successfully enlisted a subject for this coming semester.

Bad News: That, of course, requires money. Another predicament is the shitty work schedule.

Good News: I am good.

Bad News: You are bad, very bad.

Tinamaan ng Lintek
Wednesday, May 23, 2007,9:16 PM

Basahin at ipagkalat. Hahahaha.

>>>

Let’s drink to that!!!

May multivitamins, vitamin E, vitamin C, royal jelly, tsaka ginko biloba.

Dati, laging may inuman.

Balikan mo sila. Ikaw ang nagbago, hindi ang mundo.

Idiot's Guide to Kitsch

Kitsch
Idiot’s Guide to Kitsch
Kistched by Sherwin Altarez Mapanoo

Kitsch’s easy, sanitized representation of the world is the “absolute denial of shit.”
-Milan Kundera

Everbody loves kitsch. Only the pretentious ones do not. Popular culture is kitsch. Hollywood films, soap opera, even pornography, are kitsch. Everything is, contentiously, kitsch. What we watch, read, wear, say, listen to are nothing but decontextualized, recycled artistic trashes and forgeries. We appreciate and patronize them all.

But what is really kitsch in the purest sense of the word? What constitutes kitsch or makes it qualitatively different from art? Read this kitsch entry, taken from my report archive, and be enlightened – haha.

>>>

Kitsch Etymology:
- The German term Kitsch appears to have invented around 1870 in the art circles of Munich.
- Kitsch may actually come from English, from the word sketch.
-Kistch derives from German’s obscure, colloquial verb kitschen, which means to stroke, pet, smear, or lump together – a semantic space not too distant from smarmy and unctuous, which are among the kitsch’s tacky cousins.

But for Adorno: “It is impossible to define what kitsch or artistic trash is.”

Kitsch Examples:
Examples of kitsch: Hummel figurines, paintings on black velvet of a tearful clown or a beatific Elvis Presley, Muzak, Eiffel tower pepper grinders, ice cubes shaped like breasts, etc.

Kitsch Painting

Kitsch Mao

Kitsch Cartoon

Artists who create kitsch works/paintings: Adolphe-William Bouguereau, Lawrence Alma-Tadema, Andrew Wyeth, Norman Rockwell, the poetry of Robinson Jeffers

Others proclaim: Richard Wagner and Salvador Dali as “masters” of kitsch

Problems of Kitsch:
Kitsch presents a problem of what Immanuel Kant would have called, reflective judgement: given a number of examples of kitsch, a critic will construct an account of what makes kitsch kitsch.
To decide what makes all these heterogenous objects kitsch
The technical expertise of these examples is sufficient to silence the thought that trashiness of kitsch is a function of technical incompetence.

Early Criticisms of Kitsch:
Friedrich Nietzche criticized Wagner for being decadent and argued that he was only concerned with effects, big effects, popular effects; thus, authenticity became a liability, and excessive size and theatricality became necessities.

Roger Fry (1912): calls the “art”; produced by “artists’ who have not only learned to draw…learned by sheer application to put forms together with a similitude of coherence which creative impulse gives.

“Extraordinary theoretical moment of the later 1930s”
At this time, the Nazi attack on modern art culminated in a pair of exhibitions that opened in 1937 in Munich: one of “Degenerate Art,” including most of modernism, and the other of “Great German Art.”
It was also during these same years that a number of theorists in Europe and North America undertook investigation of what they viewed as the sedimentation of two apparently separate and adversarial aesthetic traditions: on one side art or the avant-garde and on the other side mass art or kitsch.
The difference between kitsch and art was the difference between nongenuine, inauthentic art and the real thing

>>>

Kitsch: The Term of Criticisms
-Kitsch as being qualitatively different from art: kitsch is a “simulacrum of genuine art.”

Three classes of criticism:

Kitsch Art

Kitsch is too easy
-merely enjoyable, as only appealing to the sensational senses and emotions, as being nothing but entertainment
-too sentimental, too cute, too erotic, or too didactic
-Broch: there are two broad classes of easy emotional effect that kitsch indulges: “the kitsch novel depicts the world not “as it really is” but “as people want it to be” or “as people fear it is.”

Two types of kitsch:
Sweet
- offers the easy enjoyments (ex: of cute puppies, children, lovers in moonlight): the world as people want it to be
Sour –offers for the our easy enjoyment –the sanitized mourning of sympathy cards, the uplifting experiences provided by many war movies and war memorials, cheap thrills of horror movies: the world we enjoy fearing it to be.

Kitsch Robot

Kitsch is too formulaic, too mechanical
-follows familiar formulaic paths
-nothing surprising except for its own excesses
-Broch: describes kitsch’s formulaic, mechanical dimension as kitsch’s replacing “the inaccessible, transcendental ideal of art – beauty – with an accessible, mundane, finite pseudoideal.”
images are frequently familiar, and this familiarity contributes to the enjoyment of kitsch

Kitsch Animation

Kitsch is a lie and therefore evil
-Kitsch is criticized because of its theatricality
-Broch: “This satisfaction of impulses by finite and rational means, this never-ending sentimentalizing of the finite, this gazing at ‘the beautiful,’ imbues kitsch with a false statement behind which one can sense ethical “evil.”
-Kundera: “Kitsch’s easy, sanitized representation of the world is the “absolute denial of shit.”
-Kitsch denies that anything is difficult.

Kitsch: The Genealogy of a Concept
The explicit characterization of kitsch did not occur until the 1930s.

The characterization of kitsch is strangely familiar from Kant’s eighteenth-century characterization of fine art. Kant distinguished the fine arts both from the practical crafts and from the agreeable arts (ex: “table music”). Kant is not only the first modern theorist of the fine arts, but the first theorist, as well, of kitsch. Kant’s purification of the concept of fine art produced at the same time, and by the same movement, the concept of impure, pseudoart: kitsch, art’s other.

>>>

Three classes of criticism of kitsch (which single out features that would make it impossible to be, in Kant’s terms, fine art):

Fine art is not easy
-crafts can be work, and fine art is not work
-Fine art stimulates the “play of the subject’s cognitive powers” unlike the merely agreeable, which can charm us even when “the mind is passive.”

Fine art is not formulaic
-Fine art is the product of genius, that is, “a talent for producing something for which no determinate rule can be given.”
-In fine art, the academic form must now show, there must be no hint that the rule was hovering before the artist’s eyes.

Fine art is not a lie, not is it evil
-Kant is explicitly set against whatever appears artificial, mannered, or theatrical: “anything studied and painstaking must be avoided in art.”
-We like the beautiful, among other things, without interest, and we present our liking as universal.
-Kitsch judgments could at best symbolize a morality-based on the universal desire to be happy, not on duty.

My First $100 Google Adsense Earnings
Thursday, May 17, 2007,1:42 AM

This is it! My google adsense earnings today finally reached the $100 mark, that’s roughly P5k. It took me six months before accumulating that amount.

My First $100 Google Adsense Earnings

When do I get my google adsense cheque? Next month. Google said they’d send the check or EFT payment within approximately 30 days of the end of the month in which the account balance reaches US$100.

My plans with the money? Simple. 1.) Treat my friends. 2.) Purchase web hosting and domains for another websites. Still researching which topics/industries are most profitable in google adsense. 3.) Buy Bjork’s new CD, Volta.

Can’t wait to receive my first google adsense cheque!

I Voted
Monday, May 14, 2007,7:01 PM

An estimated 85% of 36 million registered Filipino voters participated in today's midterm national elections. Count me in!

"I Voted"

The voting period is finally over but the heat of the elections, in reality, has only just started. Electoral fraud such as dagdag-bawas, election-related violence, protests and other problems are expected to escalate during and after the ever-problematic manual vote counting and canvassing. Now is the time to watch and protect our ballots. Yes, vigilance is the price of democracy.

Back To Intramuros
Friday, May 11, 2007,11:24 PM

After our “fruitful” cock-crow meeting, I headed to Intramuros to finally settle my long-overdue check from my previous work. I took the FX (Quiapo route) along with my officemates, Meng and Kc, who both reside in Tondo. On the way, Meng made fun of her hold-up experience yesterday and lightheartedly narrated what happened on that fateful Tuesday morning. Too bad, she lost her spare Nokia phone and expensive Givenchy watch.

NCCA Building, Intramuros

It’s been four months since I last stepped on the land of Intramuros. There were really no drastic changes in the district, except for the newly renovated carinderia outside the NCCA Building where I used to eat. I was, as usual, greeted by guardia civil clad in their infamous blue outfit. As early as 8:30am, tour buses were already parked in front of the Manila Cathedral and San Agustin Church, which is, by the way, the oldest stone church in Metro Manila. Plaza San Luiz, which comprises Casa Manila, Casa Blanca, Casa Urdaneta, Los Hidalgos and El Hogar Filipino, along General Luna Street was also packed with a troop of Chinese and Korean tourists, having their usual photo ops. The NCCA Building was still the same – still eerie. I checked on my previous officemates on the 6th floor but none of them was there. I left the building after signing the needed documents at the Cashier’s. Kuya Edgar said the money would be deposited to my Landbank account after three days. Wooohooo!

Agua de Mayo
Thursday, May 10, 2007,11:07 PM

Isang panibago at pinakamalalang sumpa.

Nestor's Seafood Mix
Monday, May 7, 2007,10:48 PM

I so enjoyed my lunch today, I want to share my father’s own culinary genius: “Nestor’s Seafood Mix.”

Seafood Mix

Yes, my father is an excellent cook, way better than my mother by a mile. He prepares the best seafood cuisine, his culinary invention in which he combines various seafoods such as squids, shrimps, mussels, crabs and clams in a single basin. He sautés these ingredients with onion, garlic and ginger for 15-20 minutes and, once cooked, adds oyster sauce, chili powder, and Sprite or 7 Up, which then turn into a delectable sauce – caramelized, sweet and spicy. The sauce is something to die for. The seafood mix is perfect both as viand and pulutan. Tsalap! Try n'yo!

Scammed
Saturday, May 5, 2007,9:22 PM

I am a self-confessed bargain hunter. In short, kuripot. So when I found out that Megamall is having a “mallwide” sale, I was delighted, this could be an opportunity to stretch my already tight budget. Thus before heading to work yesterday, I went to SM with a plan: spend a couple of thousand for a new pair of Chucks and/or a new sling bag or backpack. But no, I ended up purchasing a t-shirt. I was expecting to find great discounts, at least 25% off in Chuck Taylor shoes, but I was really disappointed. Sale items are either ugly or not reasonably priced. The exaggerated human traffic also made me too impatient. The poster outside which reads “Enjoy as much as 50% off on Mallwide Selections!” is, apparently, just a fallacy. I was scammed. For the nth time, I became a victim of consumerism.

PageRank 3/10
Friday, May 4, 2007,12:32 AM

My personal blog is less than four months old but its Google PageRank is 3/10 already. Smash! How did that happen? Well, I don’t fully grasp the complex algorithm of PageRank. The formula of how the ranking is computed, for someone like me who hates Math, is hard to decipher.

PR(A) = (1-d) + d (PR(T1)/C(T1) + ... + PR(Tn)/C(Tn))

Where:
PR(A) is the PageRank of page A,
PR(Ti) is the PageRank of pages Ti which link to page A,
C(Ti) is the number of outbound links on page Ti and
d is a damping factor which can be set between 0 and 1.

What I only understand is that PageRank is based on the number and importance of inbound links connected to a website. A website scores high in PageRank, if high ranking websites are linked to it. It is basically a “scale of measurement” that determines how relevant or important a website is.

For a comprehensive explanation and details about PageRank, visit PageRank - Wikipedia.

My Favorite Music Videos of All Time
Thursday, May 3, 2007,2:08 AM

Below is the list of my top 10 favorite music videos of all time chosen based on the following criteria: a.) personal significance, b.) creative narrative, c.) nostalgic/cathartic effect, d.) weirdness, e.) uniqueness, f.) aesthetic appeal.

1. Bjork – All is Full of Love
Actually, I love all videos of Bjork, especially those from her Homogenic album, but this one is a major stand out. I think it is the most awarded Bjork’s video. Directed by Chris Cunningham, it won the MTV 2000 Video Music Awards for “Breakthrough Video” and “Best Special Effects.” The video also got nominated for a Grammy.

2. Beck – New Pollution
A quirky video with amusing choreography. This vintage-inspired video garnered major accolades during the 1997 MTV Video Music Awards, including “Best Direction in a Video,” Best Choreography in a Video” and “Best Art Direction in a Video.”

3. Radiohead – No Surprises
Odd. This video presents a close-up shot of Thom Yorke’s head trapped inside a fish tank. He spends 57 seconds completely submerged until “This is my final fit…”. Try to count it!

4. K’s Choice – Believe
This haunting video reminds me of highschool. How I wish I had a telekinetic power like Sarah Bettens has in this video!

5. Garbage – Push It
Dark and creepy. This bullet-time video features disparate images and obscure characters such as nuns, triplets, lightbulb head man, topless women and other creepy beings.

6. Massive Attack – Teardrop
A weird video of a singing fetus. Very realistic.

7. Tori Amos – Raspberry Swirl
This is a strange video in which Tori goes through a tunnel and steps through an art piece. At the end, kids are turned into pigs then start to eat from the dinner table.

8. Air – Kelly Watch the Stars
Directed by Mike Mills, the video is plain and simple but sweet, a perfect example of kitsch. Two girls, namely Kelly and Smith, are playing ping-pong. Suddenly Kelly is hit by the ping-pong ball and gets knocked out. She drifts away in an astral like scene and returns to life by the efforts of the medics (played by Air).

9. Daft Punk – Around the World
This video features robots, tall athletes, women dressed like synchronized swimmers and skeletons dancing and walking around in circles. “Around the World” was Michel Gondry’s first attempt at bringing organized dancing to his music videos.

10. Pearl Jam – Jeremy
I remember first watching the uncensored version of this video when I was in grade six and it instantly hit me. Ten years later, it still has the same cathartic effect on me. This video, which was based on a true story, features a raging teenager who lets off steam by blowing himself away in front of his classmates.

Tikatik/Takatak
Wednesday, May 2, 2007,1:42 AM

Tikatik at takatak, takatak at tikatik.

Mortal kong kaaway ang antok.

>>>

Dalampasigan

Isang pagpapatiwakal.

Gumising siya sa kanyang bangungot.
