Story of the Eye
Saturday, June 30, 2007,8:14 PM

Help…anyone? I’ve been looking for a dvd copy of Georges Bataille’s Story of the Eye, but still unsuccessful. It’s been frustrating, no copies can be found in Metrowalk and Alabang.

My next stop: Quiapo. Should try my luck there.

I first got hold of this novel back in highschool after finding out that Bjork’s video for Venus as a Boy was inspired by this erotic, almost pornographic surreal book. Now, in-between breaks, I'm re-reading this. The zipped pdf version of Bataille’s Story of the Eye can be downloaded here.

Of Class and Crass
Thursday, June 28, 2007,8:25 PM

Class 101.

Today we had an interesting exchange of ideas on two noteworthy books in art history namely Alice Guillermo’s Protest/Revolutionary Art in the Philippines and Reynaldo Ileto’s Pasyon and Revolution. I chose to critique the latter.

Pasyon and Revolution

Ileto’s book presents the correlation between the pasyon, folk religious traditions and the revolution, putting emphasis on the agency of the masses. The book’s springboard is the Lapiang Malaya (along with its sophisticated beliefs and structure), which according to Ileto, is one of the many examples of the continuity of the unfinished business of the Katipunan’s struggle toward independence. As manifested in its theme and approach, Pasyon and Revolution puts forward an “alternative” mode of history narrated in a synchronic way using the pasyon text, an epic that appears to be alien content, but upon closer scrutiny, reveals the vitality of the Filipino masses. Here Ileto utilizes varied theories from authors and historians coming from different schools of thought, which consequently made it difficult for me to determine one single framework. Except for its diffused framework, I still find this well-researched book commendable. I, in particular, admire Ileto’s impeccable writing skills and literariness.

Crass 101.

We took a break at the Katag and Y shared something that fumed us about a certain it (a classmate of ours) who made this uncalled-for remark on some of my classmates’ intellectual competence. Let me quote it: “This class is not “brilliant,” especially ____, ____ and ____.” Bullshit. How in the hell did you come up with such sweeping statement at this early stage of the semester? Who are you in the first place? Fuck off.

Love Me If You Dare
Saturday, June 23, 2007,1:01 AM

A story-slash-game of love fused with surrealism and humor. This is (so far) the best French film I’ve ever seen.

Jeux d’enfants, with the international title “Love Me If You Dare,” is not a typical film to begin with, if we are to talk about its formula: surrealism, fantasy, romance, animation, comedy. Any attempt to categorize this film in a particular genre, in my opinion, would be futile.

Literally means “Games of Children,” Jeux d’enfants is a complicated story of a “truth or dare” game between the main, maverick characters, Sophie and Julien. Their odd games start when both of them are kids, but as they mature, their dares become more absurd and complex.

The child in me enjoyed viewing this film because of its artistic animation, visuals and montages, and brilliantly written dialogues. The director employs a lot of CGIs in achieving inventive fantasy settings. The scene colors also vary from time to time. When Sophie and Julien are kids, for instance, the background is fairtytale-like: colorful and bright, but as the film progresses, with the main characters getting older, the colors and shots become more realistic.

This film is also a must-see for the hopeless romantics. Better watch it yourself, to give a clearer idea. *wink*

Below is Julien’s “Better Than” monologue as he is fleeing from the police. This one is my most favorite scene in the film.

"Sophie was back in the game!
Pure, raw, explosive pleasure!
Better than drugs
Better than smack
Better than a dope coke crack fix shit shoot sniff ganja marijuana blotter acid ecstasy
Better than sex, head, 69, orgies, masturbation, tantrism, Kama Sutra or Thai doggy-style!
Better than Banana Milkshakes!
Better than George Lucas's trilogy, the muppets and 2001!
Better than Emma Peel, Marilyn, Lara Croft and Cindy Crawford's beauty mark!
Better than the B-side to Abbey Road, Jimmy Hendrix and the first man on the moon...Space Mountain, Santa Claus, Bill Gates' fortune, The Dalai Lama, Lazarus raised from the dead!
Schwarzenegger's testerone shots, Pam Anderson Lips, Woodstock, Raves!
Better than de Sade, Rimbaud, Morrison and Castaneda!
Better than freedom
Better than life."

Rebyu: Angel's Burger
Tuesday, June 19, 2007,9:03 PM

Ikatlong teorya: Isa itong himala.

Mantakin mo, buy one take one sa halagang P21.50.

Amen!

First Day High
Saturday, June 16, 2007,3:20 PM

Last Thursday was the first day of classes and I was reunited with my masteral buddies, Yayo, Joy, Maysa, and the rest of the gang. After our meeting with Dr. Yu-Rivera, I insisted that we eat at Latasia Fusion, the colored purple vegetarian restaurant a few meters away from Asian Center, near the UP-Katipunan gate outpost. I ordered vegie (of course) kare-kare and tocino. It was only around 5:45 in the afternoon when we parted ways, too early before work. I didn’t want to return to my apartment for a possible nap so I decided to waste time at Megamall. I went to Odyssey and surprisingly stumbled upon a huge collection of CDs at cut-down prices. The Greatest Hits CDs of R.E.M. and Moby, being sold for P249 each, caught my attention, but didn't buy them. I instead splurge on a new charger with rechargeable batteries for my digital camera. Ayus!

This will be an interesting semester.

I can sense it.
Something important is about to happen.
It's coming up.

Haha.

Sirit Puppet Show
Wednesday, June 13, 2007,11:41 PM

My younger sister, Hazel, asked me to promote this new educational puppet show on ABS-CBN titled “Sirit” where she works as a production staff. I’ve already watched two episodes of the TV program and I personally recommend this to preschool kids and young at heart (like you, yes, you! who grew up watching Batibot) as well. The show utilizes impressive animation, graphics and interesting storytelling.

Sirit airs every Saturday from 07:50 to 8:15 in the morning. Garcellano Advertising, the puppet show creator, said the program aims to enhance the cognitive, social, emotional and physical development of children from ages 3 to 6 years old, and promote the receptive, (reading via picture cues, listening) and expressive (talking, writing) language of early learners. The show is interactive and a combination of puppetry, live action and simple animation.

Sirit chronicles the adventures of boy and girl puppets, Bi and Bo, as they seek answers, uncover new worlds, unlock mysteries, and discover themselves and their abilities. They are accompanied by a female adult called Ate on their adventure.

Kalayaan/Kalokohan
Tuesday, June 12, 2007,2:19 PM

Bawal magpahayag.
Bawal magsalita.
Bawal bumatikos.
No permit, no rally.
Ito ang tinatawag nating kalayaan.
Magdiwang tayo.

My night is colored headache grey
Daysleeper, daysleeper, daysleeper

The bull and the bear are marking
Their territories
They're leading the blind with
Their international glories

I'm the screen, the blinding light
I'm the screen, I work at night

My night is colored headache grey
Don't wake me with so much
Daysleeper

Waking Life - Existentialism
Friday, June 8, 2007,11:21 PM

Just reposting this one, an excerpt from the 2001's animated film "Waking Life." Talking in the video about existentialism and life's mysteries is Philosophy Prof. Robert Solomon. Other clips on topics such as language, free will, physics, human evolution, death and many others can be viewed at Youtube. Love it!

"The reason why I refuse to take existentialism as just another French fashion or historical curiosity is that I think it has something very important to offer us for the new century. I'm afraid we're losing the real virtues of living life passionately, sense of taking responsibility for who you are, the ability to make something of yourself and feeling good about life.

Existentialism is often discussed as if it's a philosophy of despair. But I think the truth is just the opposite. Sartre once interviewed said he never really felt a day of despair in his life. But one thing that comes out from reading these guys is not a sense of anguish about life so much as a real kind of exuberance of feeling on top of it. It's like your life is yours to create. I've read the postmodernists with some interest, even admiration. But when I read them, I always have this awful nagging feeling that something absolutely essential is getting left out.

The more that you talk about a person as a social construction or as a confluence of forces or as fragmented or marginalized, what you do is you open up a whole new world of excuses. And when Sartre talks about responsibility, he's not talking about something abstract. He's not talking about the kind of self or soul that theologians would argue about. It's something very concrete. It's you and me talking. Making decisions. Doing things and taking the consequences. It might be true that there are six billion people in the world and counting.

Nevertheless, what you do makes a difference. It makes a difference, first of all, in material terms. Makes a difference to other people and it sets an example. In short, I think the message here is that we should never simply write ourselves off and see ourselves as the victim of various forces.

It's always our decision who we are."

Thursday, June 7, 2007,11:04 PM

Went to UP yesterday to enroll, making me P2,581.50 poorer. I enlisted only one subject (Art Stud 202 - Perspectives in Art Studies in the Philippines) for this semester. Dr. Helen Yu-Rivera, art critic and author, will be my professor.

If not only for my damn work schedule, I would really want to add three more units in my load, but I’m not a superhuman nor a Zombie. Classes offered by the department start at 9am, while my job ends at 6am. Shit.

Trash
Tuesday, June 5, 2007,11:50 PM

I'm currently addicted to watching these two “trash” talk shows on 2nd Avenue Channel: Maury and The Jerry Springer Show.

Not-your-usual-talk-shows, both offer hardcore entertainment with topics such as sex, drugs and violence (rock and roll, in short), extra-marital affairs, racism, rebellious teens and many others, capitalizing on live human drama and confrontation.

Maury’s “Paternity Tests,” of all the segments, is my ultimate favorite. In this formulaic series, a girl brings her boyfriend/husband onto the show after the male has denied fathering the child. After the hilarious trash talking and drama, the show is concluded when Maury announces that “The results are in!” and reads the paternity result, uttering “You (are/are not) the father!” I can't help but laugh everytime I see the guests' exaggerated reactions.

Some critics say the stories in these shows are only fabricated and the guests are hired actors, but I don't care. Watching other people's troubles and miseries could be entertaining. Well, sometimes.

Gee Why
Monday, June 4, 2007,3:41 PM

Staying awake during the crack of dawn is now a breeze. My bodyclock has already adjusted, thank God. I slept at around 3pm yesterday and woke up at 1:00am today. That’s 10 hours of uniterrupted sleep, the longest I’ve had since the implementation of the new work schedule. Talking about rationalizing the irrational, I have come to realize that working on graveyard shifts is really not a bad thing. Nyahaha. Why?

Reason # 1: My complexion has become fairer.

Reason # 2: I no longer have to endure the perpetual heavy traffic along EDSA during rush hours when I go home.

Reason # 3: Me and my officemates can go outside the building (meaning: tumambay) anytime we want to without worrying about the agonizing heat of the sun.

Reason # 4: More savings! Since shopping malls are already closed, there are lesser temptations to splurge on expensive, unnecessary things.

Reason # 5: I’m gaining weight, thanks to Jollibee, McDo, KFC, Greenwich and other fastfood restaurants that serve high-calorie value meals.

Reason # 6: I get to drink hot and nutritious taho every morning. Soya beans are very rich in nutritive components. That’s what you call healthy eating.

Reason # 7: Time, psychologically, ticks out faster. An entire week feels like one day.
