Blast
Sunday, July 29, 2007,2:08 AM

Yesterday started with bad luck and ended with a blast.

Went to CCP to watch Cinemalaya films with my officemates and Meng’s batchmates. We were all looking forward to watch “Pisay” but, unfortunately, tickets for that film were already sold out. Damn it! We instead opted for “Ligaw Liham” and a series of short films, which alas were not that good (translation: didn’t meet my own cinematic criteria). Bad trip. Nothing’s new; I was disappointed.

It was still raining hard when we left CCP at around 9:00pm to go to Sarj’s party in Fairview. Meng “successfully” drove us there with her two-week old car, though she was having a hard time figuring out how to turn on the headlights. Hahahaha! Almost everyone from the team was present at the party. We (as usual) ate, jammed, drank, ate again, ate more – like animals.

I had a blast! My stomach moved up.

Bingo!
Saturday, July 28, 2007,11:58 PM

I didn’t win anything today nor did I play this game. I only became a little more famous, and I did enjoy all the attention, seriously.

Well, it’s not a very big deal. To cut the long story short, I was just warned by someone (whose name is no worthy of note) that I could be “terminated” because of there are “mp3s saved in my personal folder.” A monetary fine would also be deducted from my salary. Awesome!

Sound pathetic? You be the judge.

How Normal Are You?

The result speaks for itself. Hehehe.
You Are 35% Normal

You sure do march to your own beat...
But you're so weird, people wonder if it's a beat at all
You think on a totally different wavelength
And it's often a chore to get people to understand you

1-18-08
Thursday, July 26, 2007,8:22 PM

This secret, still untitled sci-fi film project of J.J. Abrams, “1-18-08” (Codename: Cloverfield) intrigues me.

Here is the trailer for all those who are curious:

Also take a look at the poster closely. Have you seen something frightening?

I suggest you visit the film's official teaser website (1-18-08) to dig some clues. It has, as of today, five photographs which you can flip around if you double click on them. Another interesting website (http://www.ethanhaaswasright.com) was put up online related to the film, which also contains hidden messages and puzzles to unlock. Have fun decoding them!

This shit is weird and I like it.

Limampu’t Anim na Minutong Retorika (Buod)
Tuesday, July 24, 2007,5:19 AM

By then poverty shall have been marginalized; and the marginalized raised to a robust middle class.”

Sabay-kambyo.

“The Super Regions was not a gimmick for the occasion but the blueprint for building a future.”

Gimik ba kamo?

“I would rather be right than popular.”

Sabay hugas-kamay.

“ Hindi ako sagabal sa ambisyon ninuman.”

Tama nga naman. Sisihin natin ang ating mga sarili sa atrasado nating lipunan – tayong mga ambisyoso at ambisyosa. Kasalanan natin itong lahat.

Samakatuwid:

“The State of the Nation is strong.”

Sing-tigas ng bakal, kinakalawang.

Stolen
Saturday, July 21, 2007,1:26 AM

There is something in the subject of art crimes that really fascinates me. Is it the notion of art being a commodity? Or the nature of art fraud and crime? Or the operation of “art criminal market,” bluntly put, the relationship among art thieves, art dealers and art collectors? Well, it’s perhaps the amalgamation of all these issues.

Fine art investigation. Art History. Drama.

Directed by Rebecca Dreyfus, this art-crime documentary entitled “Stolen” presents a poignant yet edifying narrative on the still-unresolved 1990 theft of 13 masterpieces, including a Vermeer, a Manet and a Rembrandt, from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston.

In a move to crack this 16-year old case, which is considered the “largest art heist in modern times,” the director calls in Harold Smith, an aged, 75-year old, contemporary fine art detective, who is battling with skin cancer. Smith becomes Dreyfus’ guide, traveling from Boston to New York to Europe and interviewing several people, including ex-cons, art thieves, art dealers, cops and journalists, in the quest to unravel the mystery behind the crime.

As Smith travels from one location to another doing the investigation, the viewer is then drawn to the life of Isabella Stewart Gardner, an American socialite and art collector behind the museum in Boston that houses many of the most important and valuable paintings in the world.

If there’s anything the documentary is most successful at, it’s definitely the scenes of the artworks’ provenance, in which the director creatively follows how Gardner was able to acquire specific paintings when she moved to Europe. The director also employs an imaginative use of archival photos, publications and paintings, juxtaposed with several interviews with art historians, biographers and scholars, adding flair and drama to the narrative.

So is the crime finally resolved in this documentary? Are the stolen paintings recovered? Better watch it and find it out for yourself! Below is the Stolen trailer:

GMA to Run for Congress in 2010?
Friday, July 20, 2007,10:12 PM

“Who knows, I may run for Congress in my hometown.”

Oh, shit! Is this f*cking serious? GMA has implied yesterday her intention to run for a congressional seat when her term ends in 2010. Though the statement was delivered with a laugh, I still think it’s more than of a possibility. This President, known for her relentless appetite for power, as we can all vividly remember, is the same woman who sweared before the public not to run for presidency in 2004 anymore, and has also been an adamant exponent of charter change. This pronouncement is definitely a bad joke! Read the complete Inquirer story here.

More bad clichéd jokes to come on Monday (July 23) when she delivers her 7th State of the Nation Address!

the salt in my retina,

My First Google Adsense Cheque
Monday, July 16, 2007,9:18 AM

The long wait is over. I finally received my first Google Adsense cheque worth a whooping US$113.68 this morning! Yahoooo! As promised, I’ll treat my friends and officemates once I’ve encashed this green paper cheque. I have yet to scan it, before converting it to cash. Shall I laminate and frame it? Uhhhmmmm…yes! Hehe.

As you can see in the photos below, the envelope of my google adsense cheque is just plain white. No Google logo is even printed on it. The mail is postmarked Malmo, Sweden while the returning address is Buffalo, New York. Strange, huh?

My Google Adsense Cheque Envelope

The Google Adsense cheque, meanwhile, is color green, payable at Citibank. The payee is, of course, is me. Check date is June 29, 2007. On top of the paper, it says: “This paper contains a chain watermark and green background. Do not accept without either. Hold to light to verify watermark.” For security purposes, I erased some pertinent information such as my home address, check number and client ID. Haha.

FYI, the bulk of my Google Adsense earnings came from my Philippine Art Scene site, my most optimized blog, which I registered to Google Adsense last year of November. After several months of diligent posting, putting relevant keywords and placing links in strategic places in my blog, this one now receives good traffic and many clicks everyday.

The rest of my google adsense earnings, after the treat, will be spent in buying a new domain and hosting. I’m aiming for something bigger. My next target is to receive Google Adsense cheque every month. Wish me luck!

Saturday Escapades
Sunday, July 15, 2007,10:00 AM

Yesterday was exhaustingly hectic. I didn’t get any sleep, none at all. After our work, me and my officemates headed straight to Meng’s house for her much-anticipated, post-birthday party which we all insisted (haha!). It was around 7:45 in the morning when we reached her residence, it was still drizzling, and the original plan was to get a few hours of sleep first before going to Tutuban. My still-hyper-overexcited officemates, however, insisted that we immediately go there to avoid the exaggerated human traffic in the afternoon. Majority agreed, so I followed. I had no list of items whatsoever of things what I would really like to purchase, but hey it’s DV, I surely would stumble upon great goodies.

Our first stop was the famous 168 Shopping Mall located at the heart of Divisoria covering the Streets of Sta. Elena, Soler and Felipe. The last time I visited this mall was last year when I bought a dvd player. Like the rest of the squad, I was of course excited.

168 Shopping Mall

“Cheap” and “variety” are words that best describe this mall. Name it, 168 Mall has it. The stalls there sell a wide array of items such as apparels, toys, appliances, accessories, school supplies, decorations, mp3 players, watches, furniture, and many others. If you enjoy buying abubot at bargain prices, 168 Mall is the perfect haven for you! The choices are overwhelmingly endless, and for skilled hagglers (or kuripot) like me, shopping at 168 Mall is ecstasy. I, for instance, bought the following at low costs: 5 shirts with nice prints for only P650; one polo shirt (P100); and a leather bag (P280). My haggling skills really paid off, I was pleased. Hehe.

We were all enjoying our visit at the mall until, blame it on our excitement, we realized that we’ve already lost track of each other. The girls were too busy splurging for kikay stuff on the first floor when I decided to look for bags on the second floor. Suddenly Sarj phoned me saying that she was alone and the “young” ones were nowhere to be found. I met Sarj at the entrance, wondering how we could find these little girls, who, by the way, all left their cellphones at Meng’s house. There’s no way we could contact them, so both of us decided to keep on walking around. Fate was our last hope. Fortunately for them, Sarj went to the food court on the third floor and saw the girls there. What a relief!

Reunited, we then moved to the nearby Tutuban Mall for shopping part two but didn’t pursue it because it’s noon already. Meng was probably waiting for us. We returned to her house at 12:30pm, all dog-tired and starving to death. Good thing is, the lunch was already prepared. Finally, I got to taste Perez’s delicious embutido! Kare-kare and fruit salad prepared by her young-looking mom and grandma were also yummy.

While eating, Meng initiated our gaguhan, videoke sessions, starting off with “Bakit Ngayon Ka Lang” along with Carla. Each of us performed, sang at the top of our lungs, as if we were not exhausted. (Photos and videos of that will be posted later. Hehe.) We left her house at 3:30pm.

Again, thanks Beybi Mengski! Belated happy 21st birthday! 'Til next year!

Change TV Channels Without a Remote Control

Maybe I should try it one of these days. This would be an interesting, geeky way to annoy the heck out of my brother and sisters!

Family Guy
Tuesday, July 10, 2007,11:26 PM

I’m not a huge big fan of Jack TV shows, so when my officemate lent his dvd of the animated series, “Family Guy,” I wasn’t really interested. Yet I took the time to view it one afternoon after running out of dvds.

What’s my verdict? Well, I did enjoy watching it to a certain extent. The series has scenes that are hysterically funny and I particularly like its nonsensical cutaway jokes. But in general, I think it’s a mere imitation and pastiche of “The Simpsons” and “South Park,” given its brand of humor and characters. If not for the inclusion of two hilarious character – Brian (the genius dog) and Stewie (the Machiavellian baby who speaks with an English accent), I wouldn’t like it all.

Yeah, Stewie rocks!

Visit the official website of the Family Guy for more information.

Nuevo Libro
Friday, July 6, 2007,10:52 PM

A new book has been added to my chaotic library. Went to Ateneo this afternoon to buy Resil Mojares’ book entitled Theater in Society, Society in Theater. The book is on sale and is being sold for only 100php – cheap, huh? I’ll be reading this one this weekend.

Oh, by the way, a few more copies are still available at the Ateneo Press. Better get it now while supplies last.

>>>

Complete Title: Theater in Society, Society in Theater:
Social History of a Cebuano Village (1840-1940)
Author: Resil Mojares
Publish Date: January 1985
Format: Paperback
Publisher: Ateneo de Manila University Press
Pages: 200

About The Book
(taken from its back cover)

Theater in Society, Society in Theater is both a detailed and imaginative reconstruction of the history of a Philippine village, the barrio of Valladolid in Carcar, Southern Cebu. Though the history ranges from the 1500s to 1940, the focus is trained on a time of increased peasantization, the late nineteenth century and the first four decades of the present century. In tracing the history of the village, the author analyzes transformations in its moral order as revealed in the external and internal changes of the village theater tradition, the tradition of the linambay, or komedya.

In three main parts, the book sketches the processes of integration and dissolution in the structure of the village from the 1500s to 1940, analyzes the dynamics of the linambay tradition, and explores the social and economic conditions in the barrio in the early twentieth century to show how, indeed, theater is embedded in society, and society in theater.

In its combination of the methods of literary criticism, cultural anthropology, and history, the work is an important contribution to Philippine studies.

Tarantino Thrilla in Cinemanila
Wednesday, July 4, 2007,3:27 AM

Spread this news!

Internationally acclaimed filmmaker Quentin Tarantino (Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill) will be hitting Philippine shores in August to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award during special ceremonies in the 9th Cinemanila International Film Festival. Tarantino will be receiving the distinction for his iconic contributions to world cinema and continued support to the proliferation and promotion of Asian and independent films.

Tarantino’s love for Asian films has inspired him to make use of various cinematic styles from films of the region such as wire kung-fu scenes, sword fights and stylized action scenes in his own movies. His admiration for Asian cinema has made him one of its most significant advocates; the release of Zhang Yimou’s Hero and Wong Kar Wai’s Chungking Express in the United States were made possible by Tarantino.

Renowned for cult favorites like Reservoir Dogs and Kill Bill, Tarantino has won accolades and citations from various groups, including an Oscar nomination for his direction of the critically acclaimed film Pulp Fiction. In 2004, he was selected to be the head of the jury of the Cannes Film Festival.

Catch renowned director Quentin Tarantino as he graces the Festival this August. The Cinemanila International Film Festival, now on its 9th year, will have its official run from 8 to 19 August 2007. It will showcase the best of local and foreign cinema, including recent winners from the Berlin and Cannes film festivals. A special ASEAN Night celebrating the works of the region’s best filmmakers will open the event on 8 August. Cinemanila will also be having a special Focus on the films of Bollywood (10 August), South Africa (11 August), and Turkey (12 August). Everyone is invited to these screenings and to the seminars and workshops. These include Master Classes in Directing (10-11 August) and Scriptwriting (12-13 August), a seminar on the Importance of Film Archiving in the Philippines (14 August), and a seminar on Indie Filmmaking (15-16 August).

The CIFF is organized jointly by the Independent Cinema Association of the Philippines (ICAP), the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP), and a specially commissioned inter-agency committee.

For more information, you may refer to the official CIFF website (http://www.cinemanila.com.ph) or contact the Cinemanila Secretariat through its email address: cinemanila@gmail.com.

Heroes
Sunday, July 1, 2007,12:39 PM

I spent the day watching the season 1 of Heroes to see why it's such a big hit among some of my peers and what the hullabaloos were about. Soon I discovered, after watching the first 10 episodes, not only does the series deserve all the praises it gets, it is really an astounding show – nice acting, fantastic special effects, cinematography and story.

Created by Tim Kring, Heroes revolves around the adventures of several people with powers and superhuman abilities. My favorite characters, so far, are Peter Petrelli (who has the ability to absorb powers), Hiro Nakamura (the Japanese geek who can bend the space-time continuum) and Claire Bennett (the cheerleader who has a spontaneous renegerative ability).

Heroes airs every Sunday at 8:00pm on RPN-9. The second season of the show is set to premiere worldwide on September 24. Yebah!
