Violence!
Friday, August 31, 2007,9:30 PM

Our class discussion culminated yesterday with critiquing two interesting books entitled “National/Transnational” by Rolando Tolentino and “Painting History” by Patrick Flores. I chose to report on the latter. And what’s my reaction? One word: “Violence!”

Reading Flores’ PoMo book was a torment, hence I didn’t enjoy reading it, not because I didn’t understand what he’s trying to point out in the book, but because it was written, (consciously or reflexively) to inflict extreme pain and suffering to its readers. The book was molded in a very sadistic manner (i.e. kilometric sentences, liminal utterances, eclectic standpoints from all directions, etc.), making art history and art in general “unpalatable.” Flores’ writing style, without a doubt, was magnificently flawless, but I stand to believe that authoring a PoMo text doesn’t have to be this hedonistically extreme, at least for someone like me who still gives value to my readers. On a positive note, reading Flores has made me realize that I still have a lot of homework: researching, reading, intellectual masterbating to do. I’ve also realized that I’m not that postmodern, after all.

For those who are interested in reading it, Patrick Flores’ Painting History can be bought at UP Press for only P300.

Painting History: Revisions in Philippine Colonial Art
By Patrick D. Flores

Co-published by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts.
Winner of the 1999 Gawad Chanselor for Most Outstanding Book.

"This art history reconsiders how art historical productions, through the inculcated norms of art and history, tell the story of Philippine colonial painting, from the introduction of the practice in the Philippine 'islands' and 'natives' to its constitution as a State and academic institution of colonial rule. Inasmuch as these art histories have been contrived within local theoretical frameworks, we seek to track down the traces of certain critical modalities underwriting these perspectives, and so mark out a course for a reconstruction of the historical discourse through a critique of the said criticisms, a critical activity that inevitably discloses the tactics of the trade which organize particular operations within Philippine colonial art history and its attendant historiograhic analytic." (from the Introduction)

Wednesday, August 29, 2007,9:02 AM

After wandering around campus, (purchased Flores’ book at UP Press, merienda at SC, chit-chat at Oz, photo-ops with Oble) Maysa and I went to UP Observatory Bldg, in hopes of catching the supposed “orangey-reddish” spectacle of a total lunar eclipse, but we, like the rest of the students who flocked to the area, were very disappointed.

The moon was nowhere to be seen that night. Dark clouds blocked the view. Damn it!

Manifesto on NCCA Fiasco
Tuesday, August 28, 2007,9:19 AM

Just sharing this lengthy and enlightening manifesto and letter of inquiry re: the brouhaha in the NCCA, the so-called “country’s premier cultural agency.” A must-read for all Filipino artists, cultural workers, art aficionados, concerned citizens, and tax payers!

>>>

Manifesto on NCCA Fiasco # 1:

Delicadeza, or the Absence of It:
Not Something to Crow About at NCCA

It has been almost a month since the "Dear Madame Armida" letter first came out and raised more questions about the integrity and credibility of some already beleaguered personalities in the Philippine culture sector – particularly the NCCA Executive Director, her trusted artist-collaborators, and the NCCA Board of Commissioners led by Chairman Ambeth Ocampo.

Written by a certain New York-based Marianito Parreñas, the letter raised allegations of corruption, artistic dishonesty, and the "folly of bringing 'plundering cultural productions' such as Something To Crow About to New York by NCCA using people's money…" Calling it "the much-ballyhooed, very bad and almost fake musical production from the Philippines," Parreñas called for an investigation and enquired if, in Madame Armida Seguion (sic) Reyna's opinion, "the NCCA Board also deserves to be revamped for perpetrating such gross oversight or conspiracy on their part?"

Depending on the reader's perspectives, the letter may be construed as either a severe case of inggit-driven nitpicking and crab mentality, or as another one of the many detailed charge sheets against a cultural leadership that has seen more criticisms than achievements in its incumbency.

Read the entire manifesto here.

>>>

Manifesto on NCCA Fiasco # 2

A Puppy in the NCCA Window?

Is culture going to the dogs? We're asking because, as we write this, the beleaguered NCCA Board is facing another acid test with the receipt of a "desire letter" expressing Malacanang's preference for the appointment of Education Undersecretary Labrador as NCCA Acting Chairman.

The "desire letter" is the latest in a series of what could only be perceived as state control and intrusion into the country's cultural affairs. Malacanang has previously succeeded in installing NCCA leaders who are not from the ranks of the active culture sector and were largely perceived as unpopular.

True, Malacanang is vested with the exclusive right, power and prerogative to appoint men and women to head national government agencies. But it must do so guided by the principles of good governance, transparency and respect for institutional history. It must not lose track of the agencies' innate culture and the dynamics of sectoral participation and consensus building among vaious constituencies.

Muni sa Bayani
Monday, August 27, 2007,10:15 AM

Walang pasok!

Ice Ice Baby
Sunday, August 26, 2007,8:10 AM

Went ice skating at MOA yesterday with my new teammates and workmates. It was fun but I didn’t enjoy it a lot because my sense of balance was extremely horrible. I initially thought that the principle of riding a bicycle and ice skating is similar, but I was wrong. I found myself doing a split the first time I hit the ice.

MOA Ice Skating Rink

Standing and walking on an Olympic-sized ice skating rink was such a torture. I spent most of my time in the corner, holding on the crutch, finding my center of gravity and struggling to slide. I should have read this article on how to skate before this teambuilding activity. Oh well, there’s always a next time. A little more practice, I guess.

Exit Music (For A Horror Film)
Friday, August 24, 2007,3:28 AM

Please excuse my revived penchant for Radiohead’s songs. For some weird reason, their music fuels me lately; the more I listen to it, the more I get stimulated, moved, inspired.

Now, in front of my hepa-screen amid the grating voices on the background, I’m playing this gloomy song incessantly, torturing myself with nostalgia, ecstasy, dreams, clichés.

Wake... from your sleep
The drying of your tears
Today…we escape
We escape.

Tomorrow this 'horror film' will be over. At last, starting on Monday, I can sleep long and tight without worrying about some petty, inconsequential things.

Pack and get dressed
Before your father hears us
Before…all hell... breaks loose.

I’m just glad that majority of my teammates, including me, have decided to leave this place – before all hell breaks loose, before it decays our brain cells, before it finally steals our sanity.

Breathe... keep breathing
Don’t lose…your nerve.
Breathe... keep breathing
I can’t do this... alone.

Sing us a song
A song to keep us warm
There’s such a chill
Such a chill.

Yeah, we can all breathe, not only breathe, but even scream at the top of our lungs now. Hahaha.

You can laugh
A spineless laugh
We hope that your rules and wisdom choke you...

So here’s our final message to the air-headed people who made our days here as miserable as possible –

We hope that you choke…that you choke
We hope that you choke…that you choke
We hope that you choke…that you choke

We hope that you choke…that you choke
We hope that you choke…that you choke
We hope that you choke…that you choke

We hope that you choke…that you choke
We hope that you choke…that you choke
We hope that you choke…that you choke

We hope that you choke…that you choke
We hope that you choke…that you choke
We hope that you choke…that you choke

Exit.

Fitter Happier*
Monday, August 20, 2007,10:55 PM

One more week and my agony of working in this inferno will soon be over. There’s no better way to describe my much-awaited departure but a tremendous relief.

Sigh.

Finally:

No more eating at the pantry that’s full of insects, rats and cockroaches. No more jaundice monitors, vintage mouse, and dirty keyboards. No more pathetic policies. No more stalkers. No more visual pollution. No more Carabao English. No more late food delivery. No more monstrous creatures. No more Badong, Perla, Strawberry, Fanny.

No more.

As I embark on something exciting and new, I promise myself to be:

Fitter, happier, more productive,
comfortable,
not drinking too much,
regular exercise at the gym
(3 days a week),
getting on better with your associate employee contemporaries ,
at ease,
eating well
(no more microwave dinners and saturated fats),
a patient better driver,
a safer car
(baby smiling in back seat),
sleeping well
(no bad dreams),
no paranoia,
careful to all animals
(never washing spiders down the plughole),
keep in contact with old friends
(enjoy a drink now and then),
will frequently check credit at
(moral) bank (hole in the wall),
favors for favors,
fond but not in love,
charity standing orders,
on Sundays ring road supermarket
(no killing moths or putting boiling water on the ants),
car wash
(also on Sundays),
no longer afraid of the dark or midday shadows
nothing so ridiculously teenage and desperate,
nothing so childish - at a better pace,
slower and more calculated,
no chance of escape,
now self-employed,
concerned (but powerless),
an empowered and informed member of society
(pragmatism not idealism),
will not cry in public,
less chance of illness,
tires that grip in the wet
(shot of baby strapped in back seat),
a good memory,
still cries at a good film,
still kisses with saliva,
no longer empty and frantic
like a cat
tied to a stick,
that's driven into
frozen winter shit
(the ability to laugh at weakness),
calm,
fitter,
healthier and more productive
a pig
in a cage
on antibiotics.

Wish me luck.

*apologies to Radiohead

My Music Album Collection
Sunday, August 19, 2007,3:59 PM

Nostalgia hit me this afternoon. I decided to clean up my room and wipe the dust off my cassette tape and CD collection which has been abandoned for months. Some don’t have the sleeves and cases anymore while others are still sealed.

What I listed below is not actually complete. I know there's even more in many of the boxes in my room but I have yet to unearth them.

Majority of my cassette tapes were purchased back in high school at a time when CDs were not the “in” thing yet. I think some of the albums I have are rarities already. I particularly treasure my cassette tapes of Bjork, which you won’t find in record stores anymore.

My CD collection, on the other hand, is a combination of pre-owned and brand new/sealed ones. I plan to re-sell some of them on ebay.ph in the coming weeks, but a few with sentimental value will be kept.

I’m a music lover, pretty close to being geek, and I think my album collection – a mishmash of genres: alternative, pop, electronica, rock, grunge, punk, indie, etc. – explains it all.

Signal 5.0
Saturday, August 18, 2007,5:53 AM

Yesterday had been momentous for some important and not-so-important reasons.

1. My feet touched the land of Trinoma for the first time and I only have one word to describe its architectural design: pastiche. It’s also a capitalist genius: the gigantic mall was strategically connected to the MRT Station. I plan to explore the space further once I start working.

2. Had an unusual contract signing in a cozy coffee shop. This would be my most monetarily rewarding job so far, I’m delighted. Also had an intellectual conversation with my new boss.

3. Got starstruck (or dumbstruck). I saw Ate Gay, the Vic Sotto-look-a-like impersonator of Nora Aunor, at the MRT North Ave. Station, with two other stand-up comedians. Nyahaha.

4. My beloved seatmate and kakulitan, Sarj, had officially resigned from her post and I’m absolutely gonna miss this "taxi driver kilabot," her clumsiness, her absurdity, her wacky stories. See you later! Alive, alive!

5. Classes in all levels were suspended but not our work. So no thanks to Typhoon Egay.

My teammates and I trooped to the 15th floor of Cybermall Eastwood yesterday amid the heavy rain. I wasn’t feeling well; typhoon Egay sucked big time and I barely slept during the day.

(With Mengski & Eica)

We, of course, bragged ourselves to the best of our abilities, but it was Carla who stole the show. Phillip, who talked with an unusual Dutch accent, kept mentioning her name during our group dialogue. The office was nice, but I find the working space a bit stiff and too quiet. People were all busy working infront of their screens - no YMs, no Multiply, no unnecessary windows. So no more petix time for us? I don’t really know if I can manage to work in a very demanding and hectic environment, given my plan to finish my master's next semester. Hay.

Sa Wakas (Para Sa Lahat Laluna Kina E & J)
Saturday, August 11, 2007,3:18 AM

Lecheng kadramahan. Pero totoo. Naluluha ka.

Sa wakas.

To Hell with George Bush
Wednesday, August 8, 2007,9:17 PM

George Bush has a heart attack and dies. He goes to hell where the devil is waiting for him.

"I don't know what to do here," says the devil. "You're on my list but I have no room for you, but you definitely have to stay here, so I'll tell you what I'm going to do. I've got 3 people here who weren't quite as bad as you. I'll let one of them go, but you have to take their place. I'll even let YOU decide who leaves."

George thought that sounded pretty good, so he agreed.

The devil opened the first room. In it was Richard Nixon and a large pool of water; he kept diving in and surfacing empty handed over and over and over. Such was his fate in hell.

"HELL No!" George said. "I don't think so. I'm not a good swimmer and don't think I could do that all day long."

The devil led him to the next room. In it was Tony Blair with a sledgehammer and a room full of rocks. All he did was swinging that hammer, time after time after time.

"No! I've got this problem with my shoulder. I would be in constant agony if all I could do was break rocks all day!" commented George.

The devil opened a third door. In it, George saw Bill Clinton lying On the floor with his arms staked over his head and his legs staked in spread eagle pose. Bent over him was Monica Lewinsky, doing what she does best.

George Bush looked at this in disbelief for a while and finally said, "Yeah, I can handle this."

The devil smiled and said.... "MONICA, you're free to go!"

Forwarded Funnies: George Bush in Hell

We had F-U-N. Here are the highlights of our trip to Bolinao, Pangasinan last August 4-5, 2007.

1.) Patar White Sand

About thirty minutes away from Bolinao town proper, Patar White Beach was a sight to behold –

vigorous ocean waves,

fine white sand rich in sea shells,

soothing ocean breeze.

We sunbathed, meditated, soul-searched. I lost my shades. I got sunburn.

2.) Rock Sand Resort

The waves in Rock Sand Beach were calmer than Patar. The crystal clear water was also perfect for snorkeling.

An added attraction was its nature-park-slash-mini-zoo that gives shelter to exotic birds, fish, monkeys and many others.

>>>

3.) St. James Parish Church

We also visited the St. James Parish Church, a baroque colonial church located at the heart of Bolinao.

>>>

4.) Binungay

Infront of the plaza was a group of kakanin vendors. We bought Bolinao’s famous delicacy known as binungay, a giant suman cooked in bamboo. Ale said it’s made from glutinous rice and coconut milk. I bought three for P100.

>>>

5.) Bolinao Market

Before going home, we trooped to Bolinao Market to buy pasalubong such as bagoong (fish paste) and native bags.

Mga Eksena sa Pelikulang Pilipino
Friday, August 3, 2007,8:57 PM

Mula sa arkibo ng aking cellphone. Tawa muna.

1. Naka-black leather jacket ang mga goons
2. ‘Pag nabagok ang bida, nagkaka-amnesia at kelangan ulit mabagok para makaalala
3. Sinasabi ng bida ang title ng movie
4. Huli lagi dumating ang mga pulis
5. Nagsisigawan muna sa dingding bago magbarilan
6. Mahaba ang habilin bago mamatay
7. Palaging may eksenang kantahan at habulan sa beach
8. ‘Yung mahirap na babae kapag yumaman, nagiging kulot
9. Pansit lagi ang pasalubong

10 Reasons To Throw Away Your Cellphone
Thursday, August 2, 2007,5:34 AM

Read this crappy article at Wired Blogs entitled “Ten Reasons To Throw Away Your Cellphone” and I agree with almost “nothing” on it, perhaps like the rest of the 30-plus million Filipino cellphone users.

1. It makes your life more complicated. – False, especially for people (like me) who enjoy complications in my life. Haha.
2. It’s horribly expensive. – Definitely not. Old Nokia phone models (i.e. 5110, 3210, etc.) can now be bought for as low as 500php.
3. It enslaves you to a one-sided contract. – I’m a pre-paid subscriber.
4. It makes you perpetually available. – I can turn it off anytime I want to.
5. It is boring. – No way true. I use my cellphone to take photos, listen to music, play games and a lot more.
6. It must constantly be recharged. – The battery life of my cellphone lasts for 3 days. Not an issue.
7. It knows where you are. – So what?
8. It encourages stupid people to become a public menace. – A hyperbole.
9. Ubiquitous pleather accessory shops. – Another exaggeration.
10. It turns you into a public annoyance. – Cellphones have silent mode options.

My Lakbayan Grade
Wednesday, August 1, 2007,3:34 AM

I flunked.

The illustration below shows my Luzon-centric travel universe. I intend to get an A before I die.

My Lakbayan grade is D!

How much of the Philippines have you visited? Find out at Lakbayan!

Anyway, I’ll be going to Pangasinan this Friday. My next stop: Palawan and Boracay.
