Exoticizing Thailand
Monday, January 28, 2008,6:50 PM

This entry is what you call "othering" to the nth level. Please excuse the exoticizing and essentializing authorial voice. I'm too lazy to write a detailed travelogue, that's why...

1. Thais use straw when drinking. Whenever you buy a bottled water, softdrink or beer at 7-Eleven store, a straw is always provided.

2. Most Thais don’t speak good English.

3. No Thais get hungry atleast in Bangkok, I think. Streetfood are everywhere and very cheap. A single meal usually starts at 20 baht.

4. Monks are everywhere, usually barefoot and carrying a monk bag. They get free meals!

5. If you need to a take pee, look for toilet, not CR, comfort room or rest room.

6. The King is idolized and venerated. Photos of King Bhumibol are posted it any space imaginable - in the streets, restaurants, buses, even toilets.

7. It is more expensive to ride a tuktuk than a colored taxi.

8. Ronald McDonald is not an imperialist Buddhist.

Oda sa Ilog Mekong
Wednesday, January 16, 2008,4:50 PM

Paalam, bukas.

I’m Back!
Sunday, January 13, 2008,8:47 PM

Sawasdee kap! Sua s’dei! Sabaidee!

I just arrive today from an exhausting yet rewarding two-week backpacking trip to Thailand (Bangkok, Ayutthaya), Cambodia (Angkor Wat, Siem Reap) and Laos (Vientiane, Luang Prabang). I’ll post my photographs and kilometric stories in the next few days, I need to rest and to recollect my thoughts first. Today I’m more concerned in getting a decent sleep, something which I haven’t had for the past two days due to long train, jumbo and bus ride from Laos to Thailand. I so missed my bed and the smell of my room...
