The Juniper Tree
Saturday, July 26, 2008,11:11 PM

Under a juniper-tree the bones sang, scattered and shining
We are glad to be scattered, we did little good to each other,
Under a tree in the cool of day, with the blessing of sand,
Forgetting themselves and each other, united
In the quiet of the desert. This is the land which ye
Shall divide by lot. And neither division nor unity
Matters. This is the land. We have our inheritance.

-T.S. Eliot

The Juniper Tree is Bjork’s first-ever film based on the story by the Grimm Brothers about two sisters who flee after their mother is burned for practicing witchcraft. The film was shot entirely in Iceland in 1986 (the same year when her punk band, Sugarcubes, started to become famous internationally) but it was only released in 1990 due to insufficient budget. If my calculation is correct, Bjork was just 20 or 21 when she filmed this, but she looks even younger.

Okay, I must admit that I only got interested in watching this film because Bjork is in it. So did I like it? Yes and no. I find the plot and pacing of the story a bit loose and dragging. In fact, I fell asleep while watching it so I had to watch it again the next day. But if there’s anything I love about The Juniper Tree, it is its cinematography. The black and white visuals exude an aura of menace and mystery perfect for its narrative on life after death, witchcraft and mysticism. The film also gives an enchanting glimpse of how beautiful the seascape and landscape in Iceland is. The eerie musical score is worthy of note too. I like the fact that Bjork has some scenes where she hums and sings.

Having said that, I would only recommend this film to die-hard fans of Bjork and people who appreciate her artistry enough.

Pigging Out
Tuesday, July 22, 2008,12:02 AM

I had my gluttoniest (if such a term exists) day last Saturday. I don’t know what happened but my appetite just went outrageous; I just couldn’t stop eating. Maybe because I got too tired walking from UN Avenue to Manila Ocean Park, plus I was also with Vin, a self-confessed compulsive eater. LOL.

Imagine these: 1:00PM: After our GT, I ate a jumbo hotdog sandwich, a slice of pizza and Mrs. Field cookies. 1:30PM: I accompanied Meng to Teriyaki Boy along CCP to meet up Coba. My quick lunch consisted of yakisoba and mango shake. 2:45PM: Met Vin at Glorietta. I munched fried balut and popcorn on our way to Fort Bonifacio. 5:00PM: I got hungry again. Went to Sbarro in Market! Market! to have some spaghetti and pizza. 8:00PM: Our dinner was a sumptuous pancit Lucban good for 3-4 persons and a pizza at Buddy’s. 11:00PM: Got home. Indulged on some choco muchos and ate two burgers.

Woah. Thank God, I wasn’t punished for committing one of the seven deadly sins. I didn’t get nightmares that night.

Lime 88
Sunday, July 13, 2008,9:18 PM

88 is the new 77!

Yeah, it’s about time for something new. Last Friday, we didn’t go to Kamuning to celebrate Re-maine’s birthday but instead traveled to Mandaluyong to try out this quaint resto called Lime 88 along San Rafael Street. It was everybody’s first time to eat in this restaurant and we all enjoyed the food. The "homey" ambiance is perfect for inuman. Lime 88 serves superb "street food with a twist" and unusual cocktail drinks that are easy on the pocket. Thanks to Meng and Redi!

Baked Mussels (yummy...my fave!)

Kebab Lime 88-Style
